A Philadelphia Accident Attorney Discusses The Importance Of Underinsured Driver Coverage

The most recent car insurance data reveals that despite legal requirements, about 1 in 8 drivers on the road are driving uninsured – without any insurance at all. This is dangerous for both parties because many states do not require uninsured driver coverage, meaning there’s a chance you won’t get sufficient assistance for repairs, rentals, medical bills or pain and suffering.

This could also be the case if you don’t have enough uninsured coverage. In Pennsylvania for example, uninsured coverage is typically required but only for a minimum of $5,000 which is likely not enough to cover expensive medical bills.

To get more clarity on this topic, we chatted with experienced accident attorneys based in Philadelphia to learn about uninsured coverage, underinsured coverage and why it’s important.

What is Uninsured and Underinsured Driver Coverage

If you don’t know what uninsured or underinsured coverage is don’t worry, only about half the states in the US require it. While it’s typical in Pennsylvania to include it in your policy, some drivers choose to opt out.

The coverage is set up to protect you and your passengers in the event an accident occurs with another driver who either has no insurance at all, or a low liability policy only.

  • Uninsured Motorist Insurance- this extra type of insurance will cover you and your passengers bodily injuries and medical bills, including lost wages.
  • Uninsured Motorist Property Damage Insurance- this will cover property and vehicle damages if you get into an accident with an uninsured driver.
  • Underinsured Motorist Protection – this kicks in when you get into an accident with someone who has a low limit policy. For example, if the at fault driver’s insurance policy has a maximum pay out of $15,000 per person (the minimum coverage in Pennsylvania) and your medical bills are $50,000, underinsured benefits will help cover a portion of that extra costs so you don’t have to pay as much out of pocket.

Make Sure You Have More Than Enough Coverage

Being safe on the road is more than just obeying traffic laws and practicing safe driving skills. If you don’t have enough car insurance, regardless if you’re at fault or not, you can get stuck paying unfair and expensive bills. Most experts agree that you should have beyond the minimum state requirements for auto insurance, and should opt for uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage. You should never rely on other drivers to have sufficient coverage for your and your passengers. One of the best ways to be a safe and prepared driver is to make sure you’re completely covered in the event of an accident.

What To Do If You’ve Been in an Accident with an Uninsured or Underinsured Driver

Pennsylvania has a lot of confusing accident laws and many of them seem to contradict or overlap. Instead of trying to make sense of them yourself, contact an experienced accident attorney. They can help sort through your case and get you the assistance you need especially if you’re dealing with an uninsured or underinsured driver.
